FAQ
GEO, answered.
The questions founders and marketers ask us first, about how AI citation works, and how GEO Close gets brands recommended by ChatGPT, Gemini, Claude, and Perplexity.
01
What GEO is
What is Generative Engine Optimization (GEO)? +
GEO is engineering a brand's web presence so AI assistants, ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini, and Perplexity, quote and recommend it inside their answers. The term was defined by Aggarwal et al. in the paper 'GEO: Generative Engine Optimization' (KDD 2024), which measured citation-visibility gains of up to 40% from adding cited sources and about 37% from adding statistics. Where SEO competes for a ranked link, GEO competes for the sentence the model actually writes.
How is GEO different from SEO? +
SEO earns a position in a list of links; GEO earns a mention inside the generated answer, where the buyer rarely scrolls to link three. The two are only loosely coupled: Ahrefs, analysing about 75,000 brands, found ChatGPT's citations overlap Google's first-page organic results only around 6.8%, so a brand can own an AI-answer category it does not rank first for on Google.
Which AI engine reads which search index? +
ChatGPT's browsing and Microsoft Copilot read Bing (Microsoft Corporation); Google Gemini and Google AI Overviews read Google (Alphabet Inc.); Claude's web search reads Brave Search; and Perplexity runs its own index of roughly 200 billion URLs after dropping the Bing API in August 2025. Ranking on Google and Bing reaches about 70–75% of AI retrieval surfaces; the remainder needs clean crawlability for Brave and Perplexity.

What the work involves
Is GEO only about my own website? +
No, most citations are earned off it. Muck Rack's analysis of more than a million links attributes roughly 82% of AI citations to earned media, and Google AI Overviews and Perplexity are largely directory-gated: they quote third-party listings, Reddit, and reviews rather than a homepage. We build both the on-site content and the off-site footprint each engine reads.
Do I need a new website, or can you optimize my current one? +
Both paths work. A technically sound site gets GEO layered on: entity consistency, answer blocks, FAQPage and Organization schema, and server-rendered facts, necessary because AI crawlers do not execute JavaScript, confirmed by a Vercel and MERJ analysis of 500 million-plus crawler fetches. A slow or JavaScript-only site we rebuild citation-ready. The free audit shows which path returns faster.
Does structured data (JSON-LD) actually help AI citation? +
It helps as one signal, not a silver bullet. An Ahrefs study of 1,885 pages measured a causal effect of about +2.2% from JSON-LD in isolation, close to zero. Its real job is disambiguating your entity for the Knowledge Graph; the citation itself is driven by fact-dense, sourced content served in crawlable HTML.
What is topical authority, and why does it matter? +
Topical authority is demonstrated depth on one subject, wired together so supporting articles route link authority into the pages you want cited. It matters because the winnable surface is specific: Princeton's GEO research with a Semrush analysis of about 126 million keywords found roughly 82% of AI Overviews fire on keywords under 1,000 monthly searches. Clusters of specific pages win those; broad head terms do not.
03
Before you optimize
How do I know if my site is even ready for GEO? +
Most sites are not, and rarely for exotic reasons. The common blockers are basic: pages that were never indexed, content that only renders after JavaScript (which AI crawlers do not execute), no presence beyond the brand's own domain, and copy that has not changed in years. GEO compounds on a healthy site; it cannot rescue one that conventional search already cannot read. A free audit shows which of these apply before any content work begins.
We already spend on paid ads, isn't that enough? +
Paid and organic answer different questions. Paid is rented attention that stops the day the budget does; organic search and AI citation are owned channels that compound over time. The trap we see most often is a blended cost-of-acquisition figure that hides how much a customer really costs once you strip out the buyers who would have converted anyway. AI-answer visibility reaches high-intent buyers at the moment they ask an assistant who to trust, before an ad ever enters the picture.
Does optimizing for AI hurt my website's design or user experience? +
It should never. Over-optimizing is possible, keyword-stuffed text, schema bolted onto a confusing layout, structure that reads well to a parser and badly to a person, but that is a mistake, not the method. The same page still has to convert the human who arrives from the AI answer. We treat editorial design and machine-readability as one build rather than a trade-off, so a brand is named by the assistant and respected by the reader.
What tends to get fixed first, before any content rewrite? +
Indexing and freshness, the two least glamorous things. A stray noindex or a wrong canonical quietly removes a page from every engine while looking perfectly fine to a human loading it, and Perplexity discounts pages older than about 90 days. A page an engine cannot retrieve, or treats as stale, cannot be cited no matter how well it reads, so those foundations come before rewriting a single sentence.
04
Results and getting started
How long until AI assistants start recommending me? +
Technical and structured-data fixes are picked up within days to weeks; AI assistants re-crawl on their own cadence, so a measurable change in how ChatGPT, Perplexity, and Gemini describe a brand usually appears 2–8 weeks after deployment. Perplexity weights freshness and discounts pages older than about 90 days, so recency matters as much as the fix itself.
How do you measure results? +
With Share of Voice: your named mentions across a fixed set of buyer questions, divided by yours plus every tracked competitor's, reported per engine. We pair it with a citation-gap list, the exact queries a competitor is named on and you are not, so every month of work has a target rather than a vanity score.
Will GEO help if an AI assistant has never heard of my brand? +
That is the most common and most fixable starting point. Being absent from an answer usually means you are not among the five to eight sources the engine retrieves, a gap closed by getting your page to rank on Bing and by earning a product-level listing or mention on the directories and communities Google AI Overviews and Perplexity cite.
Where is GEO Close based, and who do you work with? +
GEO Close is a Generative Engine Optimization and web design studio based in Mumbai, India, working with brands worldwide. We combine on-site GEO, off-site authority building, and web design so a brand becomes the answer AI assistants give.
What does it cost, and how do we start? +
Every engagement starts with a free GEO audit, how AI describes you today, the competitor citation gap, and a prioritized roadmap, at no cost and no commitment. Scope and pricing follow from what the audit surfaces. Email vedant@geoclose.com or varshika@geoclose.com to begin.
