Why does ChatGPT name my competitor and not me? There are three parts to the answer, and only one of them is about your website.

Sometimes it's the luck of the draw

Writesonic ran the same prompts at least 10 times each. On ChatGPT, the brand named #1 changed 52% of the time, and only 8% of top spots were locked to one brand. (Writesonic, 631,999 prompts across 7 AI platforms, March–June 2026).

So a single answer, on a single day, is not a verdict.

"Which is best" questions are answered from other people's sites

"Which is best" questions work differently from factual ones. When ChatGPT compares options, most of its citations come from other sites, not the companies' own: only 46.4% went to official websites. For simple factual questions, like prices or features, it's 63.4%. (Ahrefs, test of 20,000 US prompts, October 2026).

So if your competitor appears on the pages ChatGPT reads for those questions and you don't, it can name them and not you. That is why off-site citation channels matter as much as your own pages.

Fixing ChatGPT doesn't fix the rest

The AI engines barely read the same web.

Writesonic ran 161,286 prompts through ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity and Google's AI Overviews. Only 3.8% of the sources they cited were shared by all four. ChatGPT was the odd one out: for the same question, it shared only about 12% of its sources with Gemini. (Writesonic, July 2026).

BuzzStream found the same pattern separately: 76% of citations appeared on only one of the four platforms it tested. (BuzzStream, June 2026).

Even Google's own two AIs disagree. In January, Reddit was 44% of AI Overviews' social-media citations, but only 5% of Gemini's. (Tinuiti, consumer categories).

What to measure instead

So being named once, in one AI, doesn't tell you much. You need to know how often you're named, and on which engines.

At GEO Close we measure where AI names you, then build for how each engine finds its sources: your own site, the directories and listings they read, and the coverage they trust. For the on-page signs that a rival is winning these answers, see 5 signs AI is recommending your competitor instead of you.
